I found out the reason I bled so much when Ezra was born was likely due to something called Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (D.I.C). Wikipedia it up if you like. Rare, but not uncommon in placental abruptions. Apparently there is a colloquialism for the initials D.I.C.- Death Is Coming. We are truly miracles. Now, I should mention I did not learn this from my doctor, but a nurse friend and her medical textbook. But it fits.
